New
Alzheimer’s Stamp to Be Dedicated
Press
Release
November 19, 2008 – Southport,
North Carolina (NC) -
Postmaster Steve Zarella, of the Southport (NC) Post Office, will
introduce the new Alzheimer’s commemorative postage stamp at
Carillon Assisted Living Center in
Southport on Thursday, November 20, 2008 at 2 p.m. The new
42-cent stamp will be available for purchase after the event.
With the Alzheimer’s Awareness
commemorative stamp, Americans can use the power of mail to raise
awareness about this tragic disease. The Postal Service hopes to
draw attention to the causes of the disease, the impact it has on
individuals, caregivers and society, and how research may eventually
lead to treatments that prevent or halt the progression of the
disease. An estimated 5 million people are living with Alzheimer’s
disease in the United States. Persons suffering from
Alzheimer’s-related dementia have trouble carrying out daily
activities. The disease initially affects the parts of the brain
that control language, thought and memory. Symptoms may include
asking the same question repeatedly, becoming lost in familiar
places or disoriented in familiar routines, and ignoring personal
safety, hygiene and nutrition. As the disease progresses,
perceptual, language, functional and motor skills deteriorate.
Carillon Assisted Living –
Southport is located at 1125 East Leonard Street and is one of ten
assisted living communities in North Carolina owned by its parent

team members work with family members to create a memory box for
each resident that is appropriate to their background, daily
interests and life story. For more information about Carillon
Assisted Living – Southport, contact Aimee Lamkin at 910 454-4001.
The event is free and open to
