2011 - Southport,

The Brunswick Civil War Round Table (BCWRT) will
hold its 1st anniversary meeting on Tuesday, May 3rd
at Trinity United Methodist Church, located at 209
E. Nash St. in
Southport, across from the Southport Post
Office. Registration begins at 6:30pm. Everyone is
welcome. There is no admission fee. However, guests
are encouraged to join the 277 members of this
rapidly growing non-profit organization.
This month’s
monthly meeting will feature guest speaker Joe A.
Mobley, noted Civil War historian and author. His
presentation is entitled, “President Jefferson Davis
and Governor Zebulon Vance: Quarrelsome Partners in
the Confederate War Effort.” The program will focus
on a reinterpretation of Governor Vance’s actions
while governor of North Carolina (1862 – 1865). In
the Confederacy, Vance was a major proponent of
individual rights and local self-government, often
putting him at odds with the Confederate government
of Jefferson Davis. In addition, Vance was accused
of failing to furnish supplies and manpower to the
Confederate Army. However, Mobley contends Vance was
a sincere nationalist, simply protecting the
interests of his state and those 125,000+ native
North Carolinians who fought for the Confederacy,
which enlisted more troops than any other state.
Much of
Mobley’s presentation is based on his book entitled,
“War Governor of the South: North Carolina’s Zeb
Vance in the Confederacy”. Mobley was in the
Publications Section of the North Carolina Office of
Archives and History for many years, until retiring
to pursue his own research and writings. This
month’s topic is particularly timely and appropriate
since May 20, 2011 will mark the 150th anniversary
of North Carolina’s secession from the Union.
For those
attendees wishing to become members of the Round
Table, annual dues are $25 for individuals and
families, and $10 for students. For more information
