Progress Energy Recognizes St. James The Fisherman Episcopal Church

After School Tutoring Group supports Union Elementary School

December 12, 2011 - Southport, NC - The "Power of One" award is sponsored by Progress Energy and is presented to a business, community of faith, agency, organization or individual which has displayed dedication and commitment to the children and families of Brunswick County. This year Annette Pope, Director of Regulatory Programs for Progress Energy's Brunswick Nuclear Plant, presented the award to St. James The Fisherman Episcopal Church After School Tutoring Group as a Community In Schools Adopt A School Partner for Union Elementary School.

Realizing that it "takes a village to raise a child," members of St. James The Fisherman Episcopal Church decided several years ago they wanted to be a part of the 'village'. They discovered there was a need at Union Elementary and they took the necessary steps to fill this need. During the school year a group of up to 19 tutors works primarily one-on-one with 23 students who need a little extra help. They are a great asset to Union Elementary and the children they serve.
