Oak Island Nature
Center
by
Benjamin Celinski
The
Oak Island Nature Center,
tucked away on East Yacht Drive on Oak Island, North Carolina, is
both entertaining and educational. One of the many features of the
nature center is a beautiful butterfly garden, dedicated in April of
2001 to Mayor Dorothy Kelly in honor of her public services as mayor
of Yaupon Beach and co-mayor of the Town of Oak Island. There is
also a Talking Tree Walking Trail, an interactive trail program that
allows you to listen to interesting facts about trees such as
Dogwood trees, Southern Magnolia trees, Black Gum trees, Devil’s
Walking Stick trees and more. There is also a picnic area and a
fishing pier on the Intracoastal Waterway. Inside the nature center
you will find an adorable collection of live animals including
Sebastian the Prairie Dog, Scooter the Hedgehog, Chompers the
Rabbit, Lovey the White Ringneck Dove, Chinch the Chinchilla,
Ferrets Mo & Jo, and Sugar Gliders Boomerang, Sweetpea, Aussie & Taz.
The center is located at 5202 East Yacht Drive and admission is
free. For hours of operation or more information please contact the
Town of Oak Island Recreation Department at 910-278-4747.
