Description: This is a
1965 commemorative medal that was commissioned by the Committee of
the New Hanover County Confederate Centennial Commission and was
minted by Capitol Medals in High Point, North Carolina. This medal
commemorates the Battle of Fort Fisher that occurred on January
13-15, 1865. The proceeds from the sale of these medals helped fund
the Fort Fisher Visitor's Center that opened in 1965 and helped fund
future maintenance and restoration projects.
The medal is struck in .999
fine silver, weighs 1 ounce, measures 1-17/32" (crown size) and has
a proof finish. The medal also contains trace amounts of
bronze-silver recovered from the sunken blockade runner "Modern
Greece."
The obverse side of this medal
shows an engraving of an original illustration made of one of the
gun emplacements during the Civil War. The reverse side of this
medal shows a reproduction of the Seal of the Confederate States.
