Beddow, USMC - Bolivia
Cpt. Bruce Edward
Beddow, USMC, age 76 of Winding River in Bolivia, died
Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at New Hanover Regional
Medical Center in Wilmington.
Cpt. Beddow was born August 4th, 1935 in Philadelphia,
PA to the late David and Eva Beddow. He joined the US
Marine Corps in 1957 as an officer candidate / aviation
and went on active duty in September 1958 after
graduating from Washington College. He graduated from
OCS at MCB Quantico then as a Naval Aviator in June
1960. He married Carolyn M. Walls on April 18th in
Doylestown, PA. He served as a squadron pilot in
HMM-263, and was selected as a recovery pilot of Col.
John Glenn’s (USMC) Mercury Capsule orbital flight in
February 1962. He was honorably discharged from active
duty in June 1962 and served in the active USMC Reserve
as a squadron pilot until 1972. He became a consultant
to the Federal Government and worked in the Pentagon. He
became President of a research corporation, Kappa
Systems, Inc in 1981. He retired from active work in
1994 as part owner of Capital Consulting Corporation and
Management Assistance Corporation. He resided in Topsail
Beach, NC where he fished and golfed, and Blue Mountain,
VA where he made furniture and enjoyed mountain life
until 2004. He moved to Winding River Plantation where
he enjoyed playing golf from the senior tees, and
managing his son’s vineyard in Waterford, VA. He always
loved horticulture and returned to Surry College in
Yadkin Valley, NC at age 72 to become a certified
viticulturist and help his son start a vineyard. He was
busy until his death on September 21, 2011. He was
preceded in death by a brother Theodore Grant Beddow. He
will be deeply missed.
Surviving are his wife Carolyn M. Beddow; a son Bruce
Edward Beddow, Jr. and wife Nicole; daughter Linda Diane
Beddow Barfield; brother David William Beddow,
son-in-law John Barfield; seven grandchildren, Lauren,
John, Emily, Claire, Tyler, Wesley, and Tommy; and a
great-grandchild, Brooke.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 pm on Sunday,
September 25, 2011, at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in
Southport with Reverend Barry Kubler officiating.
Inurnment will be at a later date in Arlington National
Cemetery.
