Karen L. Piette - Southport

Karen L. PietteKaren Lee Piette, 56, passed away after a short illness in her Southport home on February 2, 2012. Karen was born September 24, 1955 in Youngstown, Ohio the daughter of Frances and Charles McIntire. She was one of six siblings. The fact that Karen spoke on the phone with her mother every night following her father’s death illustrates her indescribably close relationship with her parents. She is survived by Gregory Piette, her husband for over thirty years.

It could be said that Karen spent her life Dancing On a Slight Edge, the title of her most beloved choreographic achievement, as well as the essence of her beautifully chaotic lifestyle. Her own daughter had the honor of performing Karen’s original choreography. She owned and operated Studio 64 for twelve years, a David Taylor Dance Theatre affiliate school in Denver. After moving to Cape Cod, Karen instructed for several area studios including, Studio 878, the Academy of Performing Arts, and Cape Cod Ballet. The few years before Karen’s move to North Carolina in 2007 were spent with Catherine Batcheller and Joseph Cippolla (both formerly of the Royal Birmingham Ballet, London) where Karen co-chaired the dance department with Mr. Cippolla at the Academy of Performing Arts. Karen was rehearsal assistant for the Configuration/Academy production of the Sea Captain’s Nutcracker where her original choreography was displayed in sections of Act II. Karen staged the Academy’s much acclaimed, 2004 Act II production of Swan Lake as well. With special permission, she was invited to re-stage and produce Spirit, a beloved David McCarty production piece. Karen’s genuine passion for her craft was most often reflected in her enthusiastic students and appreciative audiences alike.

She is survived by her children, Cody, Abby, and Tyler Piette of Southport, NC; her mother, Frances Komp McIntire of Youngstown, OH; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Bill Cipperly of Youngstown, OH; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Lynn and Tim Whetstone of Columbus, OH; sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Clark White of Cleveland, OH; sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Phil Faulkner of Atlanta, GA; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Rosemary McIntire of Norcross, GA; and a myriad of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 4:30 pm on Thursday, February 16, 2012 in the Peacock – Newnam & White Funeral Service Chapel. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:30 pm prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, monetary donations are needed and encouraged. Information is being taken by Frank Mahoney at 910 253 8050.
