Editor's Notes: This
postcard is of the original Drift Inn, which was located on the
grounds of the N.C. Baptist Assembly. The Inn was not an "Inn" in
the traditional sense - there wasn't any lodging in this building.
The Drift Inn was actually a soda shop and snack bar. The premise
behind the name was to "drift in" and stay awhile. The Drift Inn was
located inside of Battery Madison, one of the old forts at Fort
Caswell, which the Baptist Assembly purchased from the United States
Government in 1949. Opened in the 1960s, the Drift Inn was closed in
1985 because its condition was no longer safe to use as a snack bar.
In 1985 when the Drift Inn was closed, the building next door was
renovated to become the new soda and snack bar. The new building was
named the "R and R" building (for rest and relaxation) and had one
side of the building as a soda and snack bar and the other half as a
place where youngsters could play games. In 2002, the R and R
building was renovated and is now an Internet Café. They now serve
coffee, milkshakes, ice cream and snacks. The name was renovated
also - they now call the old R and R the Drift Inn.com. While the
building is named Drift Inn.com, the N.C. Baptist Assembly does not
currently have a website at that address.
