UNC Destiny Program Announces “Weigh To Go!”
Obesity-Focused Science Course

Press Release

April 26, 2005 – Brunswick County, North Carolina (NC) - In a state where the Centers for Disease Control reports that more than 60 percent of the adults are overweight or obese, the flagship state university is launching a campaign to fight obesity through education.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is announcing its “Weigh to Go!” module about the science of obesity during a visit by the mobile science lab, Destiny, to Brunswick County high schools this week.

Highlights of the new obesity module will be available during the four-day visit of the mobile science bus to area schools. The obesity module will be implemented in select Brunswick science classrooms during the 2005-2006 school year.

The Destiny program gives students valuable hands-on learning experience after they receive specialized classroom instruction in one of the program’s 15 modules. In advance of the school visits by the Destiny science buses, participating teachers train in module-specific workshops and receive classroom materials, which they deliver to their students.

The new obesity module is sponsored by a Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as the first in a series of new health-related curriculum. Starting this fall, “Weigh to Go!” will be taught aboard a mobile science lab with state-of-the-art equipment and supplies, funded in part by GlaxoSmithKline. Since 2000, the mobile science labs have visited high schools across North Carolina in an effort to revolutionize science education and make science relevant to today’s high school students. The Destiny program has partnered with the schools and the business community in Brunswick County to raise money and purchase professional-grade equipment for the local high school labs in a multi-year initiative.

Media is invited to visit Destiny for the launch of the new obesity module. To arrange interviews, please contact Kathleen Linder at (919) 882-1997.
