Press
Release
May 2, 2005 – Bald
Head Island,
North Carolina (NC) - Bald Head Island’s two day sailing regatta,
held April 30 – May 1 on Bald Head Island, saw almost two dozen
entries from North Carolina, Maryland and Texas. The sailing
competition, which consisted of five races, was a lively and
well-attended event. Wind speeds of 10-12 knots over the weekend
contributed to this exciting competition.
"Bald Head Island’s regatta was an unprecedented success," said
Trisha Howarth, Hospitality Sales and Marketing Director for Bald
Head Island Limited. "We are proud to promote our island as a
premier sailing destination, and look forward to making the Bald
Head Island Regatta an annual tradition.”
Prizes were awarded to the best performing boats in each of four
classes. First place winners in each class were as follows: RedNekRondeyvoo, a Cape Fear 38 co-captained by Jake Scott and Josh
Knapp of Texas, won in PHRF A Class; Banana Wind, a J24 captained by
Bob Cowen, won in PHRF B Class; Blue Bayou, a Harbor 20 captained
by Kent Mitchell of Bald Head Island, won in PHRF C Class; and We
Be Jammin’, a Tartan 10, captained by Jim Pike, won in the PHRF D
Class.
The big winners of the day were the Texas A&M Sailing Club, who
raced RedNekRondeyvoo. In addition to placing first in PHRF A
Class, the team also won Most Competitive Fleet and the coveted Bald
Head Island Cup.
“I’ve sailed in races from Key West to Annapolis, and the Bald Head
Island Regatta was an outstanding event,” said Captain Gerald Taylor
of Annapolis, M.D. “The Bald Head Island staff was great, and
everyone had a wonderful time.” “We had a fantastic turnout,” said
the event chairperson, Rona Garm of Cape Fear Yacht Works. “Thanks
to the sponsors, race committee and volunteers for making this a
banner event.”
The event was sponsored by Bald Head Island Limited, Mount Gay Rum,
The Hinckley Company, CTS Software, Inc. and Pepperidge Farm, and
hosted by Cape Fear Yacht Works.
