Intarsia Show At
Sunset River Marketplace
June 21 - July 30
Press
Release
June 30, 2005 – Calabash,
North Carolina (NC) -
Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, North Carolina is featuring
the (wood) intarsia works of John H.Gouveia, Jr. through July 30 in
a show
entitled, "Intarsia: Story Telling in Wood."
Wood intarsia is basically
inlaying pieces of wood that the artist has cut and shaped, in
Gouveia's case with a scrollsaw, to create an image or series of
images. Gouveia's subject matter ranges from figures and portraits
to florals and animals, as well as more complex carvings to form
entire scenes.
Gouveia began scroll sawing in
1996 and quickly discovered he had a natural affinity for the
centuries-old art. In 2004, the Calabash, North Carolina artist was
a First Place winner at the annual Scrollsaw Association of the
World Expo for his intarsia Guardian Angel.
Gallery owner Ginny Lassiter
said, "John's work always attracts a lot
of
attention in the gallery. For many people, this is their first
encounter with intarsia, and John¹s skill level is very, very high.
I'm looking forward to the show as much as my customers."
Sunset River Marketplace
features the work of only local and regional artists from the two
Carolinas. Over 150 potters, oil painters, watercolorists, glass
blowers, jewelry designers, metal artists, fiber artists and other
artisans are represented in the 10,000 square feet of this eclectic
art gallery.
Since its opening in June
2002, Sunset River has evolved into a community center for art.
There are two on-site kilns for the pottery students, art classes
and workshops for both professional and amateur artists, a
children's art program and a full-service framing facility.
Sunset River Marketplace is
