Hurricane Irene Information Update

August 26, 2011 - Brunswick County, NC - Please read the following updates from various municipalities:

Alert From Brunswick County:
Time: August 25, 2011 - 9:30pm

In anticipation of the impact of Hurricane Irene, Brunswick County officials announce the following actions:

Chairman Bill Sue has declared a State of Emergency for Brunswick County effective 6:00 AM Friday August 26.

A voluntary evacuation of residents in unsecured mobile homes and low lying or flood prone areas will be in effect as of 7:00 AM on Friday.

Shelters will open to accept evacuees at 2:00 PM on Friday. Shelter locations are:

  • North Brunswick High School - 114 Scorpion Drive, Leland
  • South Brunswick High School - 280 Cougar Road, Southport (Boiling Spring Lakes)
  • West Brunswick High School - 550 Whiteville Road, Shallotte

Pets will be accepted at any shelter. However, West Brunswick HS is the only co-location shelter where pets will be sheltered in the same building as their owners. Pets taken to North or South High Schools will be transported to another location for sheltering.

The Brunswick County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will be fully activated and staffed on a 24 hours basis as of 8:30 AM Friday morning to address the public safety concerns associated with Hurricane Irene.

Brunswick County Schools will be closed on Friday.

The Brunswick County Landfill and all branches of the Brunswick County Library will be closed on Saturday.

Brunswick County Emergency Services will be monitoring this situation very closely, please stay tuned to local media for updates and further information.

News From Oak Island:
Time: August 25, 2011 - 4:33pm

The Mayor of Oak Island has called for a State of Emergency with no restrictions starting at 5pm, Thursday, August 25th.

The Mayor has also called for a Mandatory Evacuation Order for Non-Residents at 10am, Friday, August 26th and Voluntary Evacuation for Oak Island Residents.

If you have to stay in your home please for your safety and others remain in your home.

News From Southport:
Time: August 25, 2011 - 10:53pm

The City of Southport is currently under a State of Emergency, declared by the Mayor at 5:30pm, August 25, 2011. The Emergency Operations Center in the City of Southport will be opened and staffed beginning at 12noon on August 26, 2011. It will remain open throughout the duration of the storm. If you have an EMERGENCY dial 911, for immediate assistance.
