National History Day Award

Szalkiewicz and a History Day participant at the
University of Maryland-College Park
June 20, 2012 - Brunswick County, NC - North Carolina
students took honors at the National History Day
competition at the University of Maryland-College Park
held June 10-14, on the theme “Revolution, Reaction, and
Reform in History.” One of the award recipients is from
Brunswick County.
Alexandria Szalkiewicz of Leland was the recipient of
the “History of Congress” award, a special prize
recognizing exploration of certain aspects of history.
Her senior individual exhibit, “Jonestown: World
Reaction,” earned the award.
Other state winners include Adam Dietrich in the junior
individual performance category, Reuben Chemmanam and
Jeff Roop in the junior group web site category, and
Baylea Williams in the senior individual performance
category. All four students are from Greenville. Davis
Combs of Mooresville was a winner in the junior research
paper category. Special recognition also went to Becka
Lynn Pittard of LaGrange with the “Salute to Freedom”
award.

Day in North Carolina is coordinated and sponsored by
the Office of Archives and History. Other sponsors are
the North Caroliniana Society, the North Carolina
Society of the Cincinnati, and the Federation of North
Carolina Historical Societies. The Office of Archives
and History is part of the N.C. Department of Cultural
Resources.
