Ocean Isle Beach Chapter of the American Wine Society Celebrates First Anniversary

Ocean Isle Beach Chapter of the American Wine SocietyAugust 29, 2012 – Ocean Isle Beach, NC – On August 26th the Ocean Isle Beach Chapter of the American Wine Society met at the Silver Coast Winery to celebrate the first anniversary of the Chapter's formation. More than 40 members and guests attended the event, which featured 3 white and 5 red "Boxed Wines". Attendees shared their views on each wine and then enjoyed a slice of cake to celebrate the Chapter's growth.

According to Chapter Chairperson and American Wine Society Regional VP Stanley Barwikowski, "We started the Chapter with only 2 members in August of 2011, and we now have more than 40 members. That's a remarkable achievement, and it just demonstrates how many people in the coastal Carolina area are interested in wine. It also indicates that there is a desire by many to learn and explore different wines, and to better appreciate a fine wine." Though most Chapter members are local, some come from as far as Wilmington and Myrtle Beach to attend Chapter events.

Mr. Barwikowski also indicated that this success could not have been achieved without the assistance and support of Silver Coast Winery, its owner Maryann Azzato and winemaker Dana Keeler. "They have provided us with a facility to hold our events and support staff to offer assistance. For this support, the Chapter is most appreciative."

In its first year, the Chapter has held a wide variety of wine related events, which included a wine dinner, a wine tour of the Yadkin Valley, held a meeting in a wine warehouse, participated in 2 national American Wine Society Tasting Projects, and tasted wines from 10 countries around the world, and 4 states. Some 110 different wines have been tasted ranging from reds, whites, fruit, sparkling wines, to dessert wines. Wine events are schedule through the balance of the year, and planning for 2013 has started in earnest.

The American Wine Society, now in its 45th year of operation, is the oldest and largest consumer based wine education organization in North America. It has chapters throughout North America and has 7 chapters located here in North Carolina. Chapter membership is open to anyone who loves wine and is over the age of 21.
