The Old Brunswick County Jail

The Old Brunswick County Jail is located in Southport, NC on the corner of Rhett and Nash Streets, across from the Olde Smithville The Old Brunswick County JailBurying Ground. Built in 1904 for a cost of $6,738, the jail was built to replace the old city jail, which was destroyed by fire. The jail is a two-story brick building. The jail includes two cells, constructed of flat iron bars wrapped together. Each of the two jail cells includes four bunks. There is also a runabout on the second floor of the jail. The jail was used until 1971 when a new jail was built to the rear. The Southport Historical Society has maintained the old jail since 1984.
