Holben - Southport
Capt.
Neil Edward Holben, USN, age 73 of Southport died on
Wednesday September 21, 2011 at Dosher Memorial Hospital
in Southport.
Capt. Holben was
born August 10th, 1938 in Chicora, PA to the late
Bernard & Esther Holben. He graduated from the United
States Naval Academy in 1961 and married Carol Ann
Krueger the following year. Captain Holben was an
accomplished A4 and A6 aviator as well as a test pilot.
He served in the Vietnam War and survived being shot
down in the Tonkin Gulf. Captain Holben trained many
other aviators and was proud to escort Admiral Hyman
Rickover during the sea trials of the USS Nimitz, a
nuclear-powered supercarrier. Captain Holben wrapped up
his Naval career working in SPAWAR and NAVAIR with a
concentration in aerospace. After retiring from the Navy
he spent another 10 years working in the aerospace
industry and in 1998 he and his cherished Carol moved
from Virginia to Southport, NC where they thoroughly
enjoyed a productive and joyful retired life.
Neil was well known in Southport for his generosity of
time, talent and camaraderie. He was a self-taught
expert woodworker who created hundreds of pieces of
furniture for friends and family and built much of the
furnishings for the Cape Fear Yacht Club. He could be
spotted nearly every day at his favorite Southport
haunts; Dry Street Pub for lunch and American Fish for
an evening cocktail. Neil also enjoyed cycling and
across all of NC many times during the annual Cycle
North Carolina event.
Neil is survived by his wife Carol Krueger Holben,
beloved poodle Bonnie, son Scott Holben and his partner
Margaret Herald, son Bob Holben and his wife Karin,
daughter Ginger Holben Vallaster and her husband Mark,
brothers Dean Holben and Larry Holben, sisters Melissa
Hieselt and Sandy Sheedy, and three grandchildren;
Andrew Vallaster, Chloe Holben and Grace Holben
The family will receive friends at 1:00 pm on Sunday,
September 25, 2011 at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral and
Cremation Service, Southport, NC. Following there will
be a service at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers please
