David E. Kelly Sr. -
Southport
David
E. Kelly Sr. 77 of Southport, passed away August 23,
2012 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in
Wilmington. Mr. Kelly was born May 5, 1935 in Charlotte,
NC the son of the late D. Ben Kelly and Julia Cashion
Kelly.
Mr. Kelly served
as Secretary of Crime Control and Public Safety from
1999 to 2001. He graduated from West Mecklenburg High
School in 1953 and studied Mechanical Engineering at NC
State University. Mr. Kelly formerly served as president
of the NC Fourth of July Festival, and was a life-time
member of the Southport – Oak Island Chamber of Commerce
where he received the President’s Award. He formerly
served as a member of the Board of Directors of the
Brunswick Community College Foundation, past president
of the Southport Rotary Club, a member of the Executive
Council of the Cape Fear Council of the Boy Scouts of
America, Chairman of the NC Ports Railway Commission,
member of the Board of Trustees of Brunswick Community
College, and a member of the Legislative Commission to
Address Hurricane Floyd Disaster Relief. Mr. Kelly was
twice awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, a member
of the Emergency Management Association, the Col.
William A. Thompson Award of the NCEMA, and a former
Lion of the Year of the Southport Lions Club. Mr. Kelly
was a Mason and a member of Long Creek #205 Masonic
Lodge in Charlotte. He was a loving and caring father
who loved golf, photography, traveling, going to spring
training in Florida, and was an NC State Wolfpack fan.
Mr. Kelly was preceded in death by his first wife Betty
Jean Suggs and his second wife Dorothy
Llewellyn.Surviving are his daughter Mary Kelly and
husband Stephen Ness of Clayton; two sons David E. Kelly
II and wife Nancy of Southport, and Robert Kelly and
wife Tonya of Oak Island; a sister Janet Saunders of
Chantilly, VA; seven grandchildren Casey Kelly, David
Kelly III, Zach Kelly, Andrew Kelly, Turner Kelly,
Mikkel Kelly, and Ryan Kelly; and two
great-grandchildren Sam Kelly and Max Kelly.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday,
August 28, 2012 at Ocean View United Methodist Church on
Oak Island. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to
8:00 pm on Monday, August 27th at Peacock – Newnam &
White Funeral Service in Southport. A graveside service
will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, August 29, 2012 in
the Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
