Dr. Percy Leon
Thomas, Jr. age 82, of Boiling Spring Lakes died
Thursday, September 13, 2012 at New Hanover Regional
Medical Center.
Dr. Thomas was born in Jacksonville, Florida on October
31, 1929, son of the late Percy Leon Thomas, Sr. and
Stella Desha Thomas. He was a veteran of the United
States Air Force and served during the Korean War. He
attended Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in
Wake Forest, North Carolina and earned his Doctorate of
Theology. Dr. Thomas pastured several churches including
Hallsboro Baptist Church in Hallsboro, North Carolina,
Godwin Heights Baptist Church in Lumberton, North
Carolina, and Grace Church in Mt. Jackson, Virginia. He
spent over 20 years with Monticello United Church of
Christ in Browns Summit, North Carolina where he made
many life-long friends and was named Pastor Emeritus.
Dr. Thomas was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara
Thomas Doerffer.
Survivors include his wife Joyce Moore Thomas of the
home; one son Stephen Thomas of Greensboro; one daughter
Karen Thomas of Bellingham, Washington; one sister Joann
Learn of Jacksonville, Florida; two nephews Gene and
David Learn of Jacksonville, Florida; and one niece Beth
Learn of Montreal, Canada.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am on Monday, September
17, 2012 at Southport Baptist Church with Reverend Jason
Bland officiating. Burial will follow on Tuesday,
September 18, 2012 at 1:00 pm in Monticello United
Church of Christ Cemetery in Browns Summit, North
Carolina with Reverend Gary Owens officiating.
