William (Bill)
James, 83, died peacefully on October 27, 2012.
Bill was born on November 9, 1928 in Oak Park, Illinois
to the late Mae and Walter James. His brother, Robert,
and sister, Caroe, preceded him in death.
Bill graduated from the Chicago Art Institute with a BFA.
Early in his career, he illustrated five books. Bill was
an Art Director for Advertising Agencies in Chicago and
Winston-Salem, NC. His work was exhibited at the Chicago
Art Institute, Louise Cameron, and in Winston-Salem,
Greensboro, and many other cities in Southeastern North
Carolina. In retirement he was known for his watercolor
paintings which were often displayed in Southport’s
Franklin Gallery. He was a lifetime member of the NC
Watercolor Society, Franklin Square Gallery, and Chicago
Artists guild. Throughout his life he won numerous
awards, including the Sally T. Griffin Memorial Award.
Bill enjoyed fishing, as well as golf in his younger
years. He was a loyal Chicago Cubs fan. Bill was also
known for his quick wit and tireless sense of humor. He
was a supportive and loving husband and father, and will
be greatly missed.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Joan;
his son, William Scott James and wife Tonya; his
daughters, Maria Brietta Nagem, Nancy Carolyn Schneller
and husband Keith, Wendy James Gulley and husband, Ned,
and Amy James Greer and husband, Todd. Along with his
children, he is survived by his nine grandchildren,
Scott James, Payton James, Drew James, Rachel Nagem,
Christian Schneller, Jay Gulley, Carolyn Gulley, Hannah
Greer, and Bergen Greer. He is also survived by his
brother, Jack James.
